Mountain View, Calif., October 29, 2013 - Cumulus Networks today announced support for next generation platform and network architectures with Cumulus Linux 2.0, the latest iteration of the Cumulus Linux OS that is bringing the benefits of Linux to networking. Cumulus Linux 1.5 launched in June 2013 with customers and hardware partners who demonstrated the enormous potential of its software-only approach to networking technology and of its subscription-based business model that separates software from hardware purchases, freeing enterprises and service providers from expensive vendor lock in. Now, with the launch of Cumulus Linux 2.0, organizations can benefit from a new level of support for their network environments that offers increased density, flexibility and capacity, as well as modern management tools.

Leveraging new platform capabilities based on the Broadcom StrataXGS Trident II switch SoC, Cumulus Linux 2.0 expands the breadth of networking hardware choices and platform densities (32x40G, 96x10G + 8x40G, 48x10G + 6x40G), enables larger, faster and flexible fabrics and transforms datacenter solutions for service providers and enterprises looking to unify virtual and physical network architectures while keeping pace with ever-growing traffic requirements.

Existing datacenter architecture was applied with dated, proprietary networking equipment in mind. Cumulus Linux 2.0 enables unified virtual and physical network architectures, high-density leaf/spine environments, simple evolution to high density 10G/40G spines and large-scale fabrics for customers looking to take advantage of the new platforms. Specifically, Cumulus Linux 2.0 provides:

  • Simplified designs with 40G: Wire-rate 32px40G platforms enable simplified 40G spine designs with lower cable count, lower latency/jitter and improved hashing schemes. High density 40G platforms are also enabling high density 40G access.
  • Multi-purpose platform for different places in network: Platforms can be deployed in different places in the networks, leveraging the flexible L2/L3 table scale for different attributes and requirements at leaves, spines and edge and core platforms.
  • Hardware Network Virtualization: Cumulus Linux enables hardware VXLAN termination for multi-tenant environments on new platforms. By decoupling the logical network from the underlying physical fabric using network overlays, virtual networks and services can be added, moved and expanded in seconds without changing the underlying physical network infrastructure, simplifying datacenter operations overall.
  • Simplified operations: Cumulus Linux 2.0 further streamlines workflows and operational models by providing simple integration with both open source and commercial versions of the Linux toolset. This includes toolsets for orchestration, routing, and network virtualization. Specific to network orchestration, Cumulus Linux 2.0 goes one step further by integrating with OpenStack. In addition to Chef and Puppet, CFEngine is also a validated add-on package as part of Cumulus Linux 2.0. Time to deployment and operations are greatly enhanced by having the Cumulus Linux 2.0 distribution supporting existing and new platform generations.

Support for the Broadcom Trident II chip set is available in standard Cumulus Linux distribution and will be available to all Cumulus Linux customers in Q4 of 2013. This timing coincides with the wide availability of the Trident II hardware platforms before the end of the year.
